Looking for a Job as a CPSW: Please Pay Attention to the Soft Skills

What are employers of nursing homes, day care, retirement homes and hospitals looking for when they hire?

1. Attitude. Are you an older worker, seasoned and stale with pessimism about the employer, job and people? This limitation may be overcome with a positive attitude and surrounding yourself with a “can do” behaviour to all that you encounter. This appeals to employers, is infectious with co-workers and customers. How do you show a positive attitude? Smile. Speak when a customer enters the door. Care. Show you care by making eye contact, help them find solutions.

2. Think. The key issue in customer disputes is not who is right or wrong, but rather how all parties can cooperate to solve the concerns. A customer complaint makes you think and provides an opportunity to cement a relationship and enhance customer loyalty.

3. Communication. Create two-way, not one-way communication to allow feedback and reactions to messages. The greatest loss of customers is because they feel badly treated. A lack of caring is clearly communicated, even if not in words. Remember we cannot control communication, but we can learn effective ways to influence it.

4. CPSWs are in the Customer Service Business. Like a hotel, a hospital operation is only as good as the service providers in the hospitality industry. Your conversation should always be tactful and businesslike, practicing etiquette, confidentiality and courtesy is a disciplined manner of behaviour.
